TECHNOLOGY MISSION PROJECT ON HYDROGEN PRODUCTION THROUGH BIOLOGICAL ROUTES

SPONSORED BY: MINISTRY OF NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY (MNRE), New Delhi.

Project Objectives

  • Characterization of various substrates like cane molasses, distillery wastes, paper mill effluents, etc. that are rich in carbohydrates and can be utilized for hydrogen production.
  • Optimization of various physico-chemical and biological process parameters for maximum production.
  • Development of prototype model for demonstrating the production process.
  • Evaluation of the material and energy analysis of the process.
  • Scale up of the production system which includes pilot scale studies on hydrogen production from carbohydrate of bio-organic wastes.
  • Design of a commercial plant for bio-hydrogen production.

EXPECTED OUTPUT OF THE PROJECT

  • Optimization of physico-chemical parameters for the high rate bio-hydrogen production process.
  • Development of proto-type model for the scale up studies and demonstration of the process.
  • 10 cubic meter pilot plant demonstration at three different locations in India i.e. at Kharagpur, New Delhi and Hyderabad with hydrogen generation capacity of 30,000 to 50,000 liters per day
  • Material and energy analysis of the process.

INDO-DENMARK COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECT ON HIGH RATE ALGAL BIOMASS PRODUCTION FOR FOOD, FEED, BIOCHEMICALS AND BIOFUELS

SPONSORED BY:DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY (DBT), NEW DELHI.

Project Objectives

  • Develop promising technologies for production of alginates and beta-carotene that can be used as food supplements.
  • Develop technologies for production of biochemicals such as pigments (chlorophylls, phycobilins) and phenolic compounds (phlorotannins, terpenes, flavonoids).
  • Develop technologies for utilisation of algae (both micro and macro algae) with high growth rates for production of biofuels (biohydrogen, biomethane, bioethanol, and biodiesel).
  • Development of an algal cultivation rotation system.
  • A new concept integrating biofuel production with algal cultivation by recycling of CO2 from flue gas of gas engines towards algae growing facility and recycling of process wastewaters as nutrient enrichment for algae cultivation.
  • Develop an innovative bioflocculation method for sustainable harvesting of microalgae.
  • Investigate algae as biofertilisers for promotion of rice, and wheat growth.
  • Evaluate the sustainability of utilisation of algae for food, biochemicals and biofuels production.
